How to Pose for Boudoir Photos: You Don’t Need to Know How

One of the biggest questions I hear before a boudoir session is:

“But what if I don’t know how to pose?”

Good news. You don’t need to.

Most of the women I photograph have never modeled, have never practiced boudoir poses and have absolutely no idea what to do in front of the camera. That is completely normal.

During your boudoir photography experience, I guide you through every single pose, from where to put your hands and feet to where to look and even what to do with your facial expression.

Your job is simply to show up. Posing is my job.

You Do Not Need Modeling Experience for Boudoir Photos

The women you see in my boudoir photo gallery are real women, not professional models.

They have different ages, body types, comfort levels and reasons for booking their sessions.

What they have in common is that I posed them.

I have photographed women since 2008, and posing and lighting are two of the most important tools I use to create beautiful, flattering boudoir portraits.

I’m looking at things you probably aren't thinking about at all. Your posture. Your hands. Your chin. Your shoulders. Your curves. The direction of the light. The angle of the camera.

You don't have to figure any of that out.

What Does Guided Boudoir Posing Actually Mean?

When I say your boudoir session is fully guided, I mean fully guided.

I don't stand across the room and tell you to “look sexy.”

I show you what to do.

I will demonstrate poses when needed and then guide you into the position that works best for your body. I’ll make small adjustments to your hands, legs, shoulders, back and face to create the finished image.

Sometimes moving your chin an inch or changing the position of a hand can completely change a photograph.

Those little details are my responsibility, not yours.

Boudoir Poses Are Designed for Your Body

There isn't one list of “perfect boudoir poses” that works for every woman.

And there shouldn't be.

Your boudoir session is customized around you.

I consider your body, your comfort level, your wardrobe and the sets you've chosen when deciding how I want to photograph you.

Some poses emphasize curves. Others create beautiful lines through the body. Some are soft and romantic. Others are bold, powerful or sexy.

We are not trying to force your body into somebody else's photograph.

We are creating photographs designed around your body.

Yes, Some Boudoir Poses Feel a Little Weird

Here's something you should know before your session.

A pose can feel completely ridiculous and look absolutely incredible in a photograph.

You may be arching your back more than feels natural. Pointing your toes. Pushing your hips in a certain direction. Holding your shoulders differently. Or putting your hand somewhere that feels strangely specific.

Trust me.

The camera sees things differently than you experience them while you're holding the pose.

You don't have to wonder whether you're doing it correctly. I'll adjust you until I have exactly what I need.

Your Hands, Face and Expression Matter Too

Boudoir posing isn't just about your body.

Your hands and facial expressions can completely change the feeling of an image.

And yes, I help you with those too.

I'll guide you on where to look, what to do with your eyes, how to position your mouth and where to place your hands.

You aren't going to hear me say, “Okay, now give me a sexy face,” and leave you wondering what on earth that means.

The goal is for your expressions to feel natural and fit the mood we're creating.

What If I'm Nervous About My Body?

You are not expected to walk into my studio completely confident.

In fact, many women don't.

Part of the reason women book a boudoir session is because they want to see themselves differently.

Professional posing and lighting allow me to photograph your body intentionally while highlighting the features you love.

You can see that transformation in my real client boudoir testimonials and throughout my gallery.

One of my clients described her experience perfectly:

“All I had to do was listen to her direction.”

Exactly.
